This two and half storey residence is a synthesis of “Basstu Shashtra”, “Western Neo-classical Architecture” and “Modern Technology”. It also utilizes the aspect of “Energy Efficiency”. Sizes of all windows were worked out based on the depth, function, cross-ventilation& orientation of the room. Large openings at staircase at south allow plenty of daylight and solar heat during winter. The Italian marbles top on the stair meant to act as a thermal mass keeping the whole building warm.Small sized windows are designed at west façade in order to prevent over heating but allowing pleasant breezing of westerly wind of Kathmandu valley during summer and at the meantime allowing solar exposure during winter afternoons. The Client’s feed back is that even though ACs are installed in all the rooms; he seldom have to use them as most of the rooms are heated by solar rays during winter and due to arrangement of proper cross ventilation all the rooms are cool during summer.
